Tips for replacing coil springs

The springs absorb the impacts caused by potholes and surface irregularities, as well as guarantee the vehicle’s height, balance and stability on curves and when breaking. That's why they are considered such an important safety item. To ensure your safety when driving, we recommend a visual inspection of the spring’s and suspension’s condition every 10,000 kilometers, replacing the vehicle’s springs when the following situations occur:

1. When replacing shock absorbers

Why?

To ensure the good performance of the suspension.
The springs absorb the impacts and guarantee the performance of the shock absorbers (vehicle height), ensuring greater durability for both.
We recommend replacing the spring/shock absorber set every 40,000 to 50,000 kilometers.

2. If the spring's paint is peeling off

Symptom
Sign of the presence of rust

Consequence
Rust destroys the treatment given to the spring’s steel. It contributes to the formation of micro-cracks and the consequent breaking of the spring.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Lowering of the vehicle

Symptom
The front or the rear of the vehicle is closer to the ground, or the sides are uneven.

Consequence
Alteration of the suspension’s path (shock absorber and jamb).
Uneven wear of the tires.
Premature wear of shock absorbers, jambs and pads.
Impossible to carry out alignment (negative camber).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. If the spring’s spirals or coils are pounding

Symptom
This happens when the spring loses some of its tension (load), and deflects to the point where its coils knock each other.

Consequence
Loss of vehicle stability.
Dry knocks in the suspension.
Premature wear of the tires, shock absorbers, jambs, pads and other suspension components.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. If the jambs have been damaged

Symptom
The springs seem lower or they have lost their capacity to absorb impacts.

Consequence
Dry knocks in the suspension.
Premature wear of the suspension components and tires.
Cracks in the vehicle structure.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. When the spring breaks

Symptom
The breaking of one of the spring’s coils, resulting immediately in uneven vehicle height.

Consequence
Great probability of losing control of the vehicle and eminent danger of an accident.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments

To avoid problems caused by the improper installation of the springs, thus altering the vehicle’s characteristics and jeopardizing its durability, always check the following points before carrying out the installation:

• Year and model
• Air conditioning
• Automatic transmission
• Motorization
• Sport versions
• 2 or 4 doors
• Vehicles driven by natural gas (GNV)
• Power steering (Fiat Siena)

Important

The springs are assembled on the suspension under pressure and they should be installed by qualified professionals who have the appropriate training and tools to ensure their safe installation and correct assembly.

Do not cut the coils or heat the springs with the intention of lowering the vehicle. Such a procedure implies in the loss of the guarantee and increases the chance of an accident, since such springs may break or shift out of the suspension housing.

Fabrini coil springs packaging is recyclable. After it has served its purpose it can be forwarded to a recycling center in your city.

If any of the above mentioned symptoms occur, we recommend the immediate replacement of the springs.

The ideal change includes the replacement of all four parts, or as a last resort, the pairs (front or rear).

Vehicle balance and stability on curves or when braking requires the good operation of the spring/shock absorber set.

Until the present day, there is no proven technical process for the remanufacturing or reconditioning of coil springs.
